Itinerary

DAY

Arrival in Paro, Thimphu Sightseeing (54 km, 1 hr)

Upon your arrival at Paro Airport, a warm welcome awaits you. From there, we embark on a scenic drive to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. Along the way, we make a brief stop at Tamchog Monastery, a historical gem built in 1420 by Thang Tong Gyalpo (1385 – 1464). In the afternoon, we delve into the heart of Thimphu, visiting the National Memorial Chorten, exploring the Craft Bazaar, and admiring the Tashichho Dzong, the Royal Secretariat. The day concludes with a delightful dinner at the hotel, where you’ll spend the night.

DAY

Thimphu Exploration

Our second day in Thimphu begins with visits to some of the city’s most iconic sites. We start with a visit to the tallest sitting Buddha statue in the world, an awe-inspiring 51.5-meter masterpiece located at Kuensel Phodrang. We then explore the serene Changangkha Lhakhang, the Takin Preserve Center, and the scenic Sangay Gang Viewpoint. Our journey continues with a visit to Dupthop Lhakhang, one of the few surviving nunneries in Bhutan. For lunch, we dine at the Simply Bhutan Museum restaurant. In the afternoon, we delve into the world of Bhutanese art and culture, visiting the National Postal Museum, where you can even create personalized stamps, and the School of 13 Arts and Crafts (Painting School). The evening offers free time to roam the town for shopping and photography.

DAY

Dochula Pass and Druk Wangyel Festival

On the morning of day three, we embark on a journey to the breathtaking Dochu La Pass, where 108 meticulously arranged stupas and panoramic views of the Himalayan mountain ranges to the north await. Here, we witness the vibrant and authentic Druk Wangyel Festival 2023. In the afternoon, our journey continues as we drive to Punakha, with a visit to the renowned Chimi Lhakhang, also known as “The Temple of Fertility.”

DAY

Punakha to Gangtey (75 km, 2 hrs)

Our day begins with a hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Choling Monastery, a beautiful architectural creation built by Her Majesty Queen Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck. We then explore Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most striking fortresses, and take a leisurely stroll across the longest suspension bridge in the country, spanning an impressive 160 meters. In the afternoon, we continue our journey to Gangtey, with stops at Gangtey Gompa Monastery and the Crane Information Center. Here, we have the opportunity to explore the serene Phobjikha valley, a winter haven for the Rare Black-necked Cranes.

DAY

Gangtey to Paro (170 km, 4 hrs)

Our morning drive to Paro is marked by occasional stops for picturesque photo opportunities. In the afternoon, we explore Paro’s historic treasures, starting with a visit to Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower now housing the National Museum of Bhutan. We then explore the Rinpung Dzong, a historic fortress built in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. The evening allows for leisurely shopping and photography in Paro’s town.

DAY

Tiger's Nest Hike

The morning’s adventure promises a memorable hike to the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang), one of Bhutan’s most photographed landmarks. The hiking trail is part of the captivating Bumdra trek in Paro Valley. In the afternoon, we visit Drugyal Dzong, an architectural gem built in 1647 by the great Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, and Kichu Lhakhang, a historic temple constructed in 659 A.D. by Tibetan King Srongtsen Gampo.

DAY

Departure

After breakfast, it’s time to bid farewell to Bhutan. We drive to the airport, marking the conclusion of this remarkable journey, the Druk Wangyel Tshechu Festival tour.
